Effects of Overexpression of the Endogenous Farnesyl Diphosphate Synthase on the Artemisinin Content in Artemisia annua L.

Abstract

Artemisinin is a novel effective antimalarial drug extracted from the medicinal plant Artemisia annua L. Owing to the tight market and low yield of artemisinin, there is great interest in enhancing the production of artemisinin. In the present study, farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FPS) was overexpressed in high‐yield A. annua to increase the artemisinin content. The FPS activity in transgenic A. annua was two‐ to threefold greater than that in non‐transgenic A. annua. The highest artemisinin content in transgenic A. annua was approximately 0.9% (dry weight), which was 34.4% higher than that in non‐transgenic A. annua. The results demonstrate the regulatory role of FPS in artemisinin biosynthesis. (Managing editor: Wei Wang)

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Upregulation of FDS by genetic transformation of A. annua using a constitutive promoter resulted in increased artemisinin production.

“upregulation of FDS by genetic transformation of A. annua using constitutive promoter resulted in an increased artemisinin production [29]”
  • FDS1 may be a rate-limiting enzyme in artemisinin biosynthesis.

“indicating that FDS1 also may be a rate-limiting enzyme in artemisinin biosynthesis”
  • Overexpression of FDS1 in A. annua results in an increase in artemisinin production, indicating it is a rate-limiting enzyme in this pathway.

“Overexpression of FDS1 in A. annua results in an increase in artemisinin production [29,30] indicating that it is a rate-limiting enzyme in this pathway.”
  • Investigators have concentrated on expressing enzymes from phases 1 and 2 of the artemisinin biosynthetic route in transgenic organisms, including HMGR, FPPS, ADS, and CYP71AV1.

“To date, investigators have concentrated on expressing the enzymes from phases 1 and 2 of the biosynthetic route to artemisinin in transgenic organisms (see Scheme 9 in Section 3). These have included: HMG-CoA reductase (HMGR) [370]; farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FPPS) [371, 372,373,374]; amorpha-4,11-diene synthase (ADS) [375,376,377]; and the P450 enzyme which oxidises amorpha-4,11-diene to art”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
