Developmental Pathways to Substance Abuse

Mayes, Linda C., Suchman, Nancy E.·2015·Developmental Psychopathology

Abstract

This chapter discusses the magnitude of the problem of substance use and abuse in adolescence. It explains the risk factors for initiating substance use, including comorbid conditions, and similarly those factors that are either risky or protective for a trajectory to substance abuse. The chapter suggests two complementary models for these trajectories, one that emphasizes the pathway to use and abuse and a second that illustrates the factors leading to a transition from abuse to dependence. The factors explaining these trajectories are multivariate and interactive. Given the many potential trajectories to drug use initiation, the concepts of equifinality and multifinality are particularly relevant to research and intervention development that aim to understand and alter adverse trajectories toward adolescent substance abuse and dependence. The chapter concludes with a summary of possible future directions to elucidate further adolescent trajectories to substance use and dependence.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
