Evidence for indigenous nitrogen in sedimentary and aeolian deposits from the Curiosity rover investigations at Gale crater, Mars

Abstract

Significance: We present data supporting the presence of an indigenous source of fixed nitrogen on the surface of Mars in the form of nitrate. This fixed nitrogen may indicate the first stage in development of a primitive nitrogen cycle on the surface of ancient Mars and would have provided a biochemically accessible source of nitrogen.

  • The Curiosity rover investigations at Gale crater on Mars discovered indigenous N in sedimentary and aeolian deposits.

“It is also worth noting that the Curiosity rover investigations at Gale crater on Mars discovered indigenous N in sedimentary and aeolian deposits (Stern et al., 2015), although its exact concentration and potential use for plant growth is debatable.”
  • Oxychlorine species are present in martian soil and could include (per)chlorate salts and/or peroxide species; nitrates are also present.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
