CRITERION-RELATED VALIDITY OF CURRICULUM-BASED MEASURES IN WRITING FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Espin, Christine A .·1999·Reading & Writing Quarterly

Abstract

In this study , we examined the criterion - related validity of curriculum - based measures in written expression for students at the secondary level. Participants were 147 students in the 10th grade. Relations between the curriculum - based writing measures and other measures of student performance in written expression (performance on standardized achievement tests , English grades, program placement, and independent ratings of writing quality) were examined. Results revealed that a combination of measures was better than any single measure for predicting students' general performance in written expression. Three measures added to the prediction of students' general writing proficiency: the number of characters per word, the number of sentences written, and the mean length of correct word sequences. The feasibility and sustainability of implementing curriculum - based measurement at the secondary level are discussed.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
