ABSTRACT Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are recognized for their immunomodulatory capabilities, tumor-homing abilities, and capacity to serve as carriers for therapeutic agents. This review delves into the role of adoptively transferred MSCs in tumor progression, their interactions with the tumor microenvironment, and their use in delivering anti-cancer drugs, oncolytic viruses, and genetic material. It also addresses the challenges and limitations associated with MSC therapy, such as variability in MSC preparations and potential tumorigenic effects emphasizing the need for advanced genetic engineering and personalized approaches to enhance therapeutic efficacy. The review concludes with an optimistic outlook on the future of MSC-based therapies, underscoring their promise to develop effective and personalized cancer treatments.

Mesenchymal stem cells have demonstrated the ability to mediate resistance to chemotherapy and other treatments.
“Moreover, MSCs have demonstrated the ability to mediate resistance to chemotherapy and other treatments, thereby complicating therapeutic strategies [8, 9].”
From Mesenchymal stromal cells in bone marrow niche of patients with multiple myeloma: a double-edged sword (2025) · cites this paper as [8]
The sections on MSC-induced immunosuppression and tumor growth promotion say MSCs can protect tumors and complicate cancer therapy. However, the Introduction attributes resistance to chemotherapy and other conventional treatments to cancer biology, not to MSCs; our copy does not establish MSC-mediated treatment resistance. About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
