Analysis of Digital Twin Applications in Energy Efficiency: A Systematic Review
Open accessAbstract
Digital Twin (DT) technology is emerging as a powerful tool for optimizing energy efficiency and industrial sustainability. By creating virtual replicas of physical systems, DTs enable real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and resource optimization, offering new opportunities to meet growing energy demands. Despite its potential, the comprehension of DT technology’s applications, benefits, and challenges remains limited. This systematic review explores the role of Digital Twins in energy efficiency across various industries. A structured literature search was conducted in IEEE Xplore, Elsevier, Springer, MDPI, and Google Scholar, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. After applying the predefined inclusion criteria, 50 studies were selected for in-depth analysis. The findings highlight that DT implementation can lead to energy savings of up to 30%, reduce operational costs, and improve predictive maintenance strategies. Their impact is particularly notable in smart buildings, manufacturing, and industrial processes, where real-time data analytics contribute to better energy management. However, significant barriers remain, including high implementation costs, data security risks, and the complexity of integrating DTs with existing infrastructures. By synthesizing the current research, this review underscores the transformative potential of Digital Twins while identifying key challenges that need to be addressed for their wider adoption. Future efforts should focus on developing standardized methodologies, reducing implementation costs, and enhancing cybersecurity measures to maximize their benefits in energy efficiency and sustainability.

TL;DR
This systematic review synthesizes 50 studies on Digital Twin applications for energy efficiency, reporting energy savings up to 30% and cost/maintenance benefits across smart buildings, manufacturing, and industrial processes. It identifies high implementation costs, data security, interoperability, and standardization gaps as barriers to wider adoption.
Key findings
- Across reviewed studies, DT implementation can lead to energy savings of up to 30%, with specific reported reductions including 15–20% in building HVAC systems, up to 10% fuel reduction in thermal power plants, and 15–25% carbon emission reductions.
- Cost and operational benefits include 20–30% lower maintenance costs, 5–10% overall cost reductions, and a 63.5% reduction in additional operational costs in one energy scheduling study.
- Applications span smart buildings, manufacturing, smart grids, mobility, and waste management; digitalization with DT is reported to increase productivity 3–5% per year and improve urban waste management efficiency by 20%.
- Barriers include high initial investment, data quality/integration issues, cybersecurity risks, lack of common standards, and interoperability with legacy systems.
Methods
- Systematic review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines and the PICO framework; searched IEEE Xplore, Elsevier, Springer, MDPI, and Google Scholar.
- Screening process: 500,000 articles identified, 1,500 screened after duplicate removal, 150 full-text articles assessed for eligibility, and 50 studies included in the final review.
- Data extraction and risk-of-bias assessment were performed, followed by thematic synthesis combining quantitative energy/cost outcomes with qualitative implementation insights.
Limitations
- Paper-stated: high implementation costs, data security and ownership risks, lack of common data standards/tools, diversity of source systems, interoperability with existing software, data quality issues, high computational demands, and skills/training gaps.
- Paper-stated research gaps: inconsistent reported efficiency improvements across industries, lack of comparative analyses explaining sector variation, lack of standardized DT methodologies and evaluation criteria, and few studies on long-term DT model degradation.
- Evident from the text: as a review, it synthesizes secondary studies without new empirical validation; reported savings vary (e.g., up to 30% vs. 15–20% for HVAC) and are not reconciled, and some sections are duplicated or garbled, limiting reproducibility.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-11.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-11.
Cited sources are checked by gpt-6-sol.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
