Rewiring of Cyanobacterial Metabolism for Hydrogen Production: Synthetic Biology Approaches and Challenges

Krishnan, Anagha, Qian, Xiao, Ananyev, Gennady, Lun, Desmond S., Dismukes, G. Charles·2018·Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology

Abstract

With the demand for renewable energy growing, hydrogen (H 2 ) is becoming an attractive energy carrier. Developing H 2 production technologies with near-net zero carbon emissions is a major challenge for the "H 2 economy." Certain cyanobacteria inherently possess enzymes, nitrogenases, and bidirectional hydrogenases that are capable of H 2 evolution using sunlight, making them ideal cell factories for photocatalytic conversion of water to H 2 . With the advances in synthetic biology, cyanobacteria are currently being developed as a "plug and play" chassis to produce H 2 . This chapter describes the metabolic pathways involved and the theoretical limits to cyanobacterial H 2 production and summarizes the metabolic engineering technologies pursued.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
