Abstract

Despite strong indications of elevated risk of suicidal behavior in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, limited attention has been given to research, interventions or suicide prevention programs targeting these populations. This article is a culmination of a three-year effort by an expert panel to address the need for better understanding of suicidal behavior and suicide risk in sexual minority populations, and stimulate the development of needed prevention strategies, interventions and policy changes. This article summarizes existing research findings, and makes recommendations for addressing knowledge gaps and applying current knowledge to relevant areas of suicide prevention practice.

  • Social stigma, prejudice, and discrimination targeting members of LGBT minorities are explanatory factors for suicide, in addition to mental problems.

“there are other explanatory factors such as social stigma, prejudice, and discrimination that target the members of these minorities.”

From Health From a Gender Perspective (2017) · cites this paper as Haas et al., 2010

The “Stigma, Prejudice and Discrimination” section says stigma, prejudice, and discrimination help explain elevated suicide-attempt rates among LGB people. The cited passage does not establish the same explanation for transgender people or for suicide deaths, so the claim is broader than the evidence. (LLM, conf=0.85)

  • There is a relationship between minority status regarding gender and sex and a high rate of suicide.

“international research has established the existence of a relationship between minority status regarding gender and sex and a high rate of suicide (Haas et al., 2010)”

From Health From a Gender Perspective (2017) · cites this paper as Haas et al., 2010

The Suicide Attempts section reports strong international evidence of elevated suicide-attempt rates among LGB people. But the Knowledge Gaps section says representative evidence on completed suicide is lacking, and the transgender section says little is known about completed suicide in that population. The claim is therefore supported for suicide risk and attempts, but overstates what is established about suicide deaths across sexual- and gender-minority populations. (LLM, conf=0.88)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
