Abstract

Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and storing greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from the atmosphere. The high concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere is one of the causes of catastrophic climate change. Recently, a wide range of technologies have been developed to capture atmospheric CO 2 and reduce its concentration in the atmosphere. In this regard, living organisms, particularly photosynthetic organisms, play an important role in lowering atmospheric CO 2 levels because they use CO 2 as a raw material to generate biomass via oxygenic photosynthesis and release oxygen (O 2 ) into the atmosphere. Cyanobacteria are prokaryotic photosynthetic organisms that perform oxygenic photosynthesis and are more efficient at capturing CO 2 than other photosynthetic organisms. Moreover, they grow faster and have minimal growth requirements. They are also ease to genetically modify to create strains with high CO 2 capturing efficiency. Furthermore, they efficiently convert atmospheric CO 2 into bio-based chemicals, including biofuel, bioplastic, sugar, and plant secondary metabolites. They have recently been considered as potential candidates for carbon sequestration. However, large-scale cyanobacterial carbon capture faces numerous challenges. This review focuses on cyanobacterial carbon capture, storage, and utilization techniques. It also highlights the challenges associated with cyanobacterial carbon capture and future prospects for overcoming them.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
