Abstract

In this paper we propose a representative simulation test-case of E × B discharges accounting for plasma wall interactions with the presence of both the electron cyclotron drift instability and the modified-two-stream-instability. Seven independently developed particle-in-cell (PIC) codes have simulated this benchmark case, with the same specified conditions. The characteristics of the different codes and computing times are given. Results show that both instabilities were captured in a similar fashion and good agreement between the different PIC codes is reported as main plasma parameters were closely related within a 5% interval. The number of macroparticles per cell was also varied and statistical convergence was reached. Detailed outputs are given in the supplementary data, to be used by other similar groups in the perspective of code verification.

  • Despite the computational cost of conventional explicit EM PIC, it could still be possible to employ it in some cases when the corresponding thruster is small enough or by artificially reducing it using scaling techniques, though the physics might not be entirely equivalent to that of the original setup.

  • When the feedback of the plasma on the field is important, it is necessary to solve for the full E and B fields from the complete set of Maxwell's equations without making any approximations.

Section 2.2 describes a prescribed axial electric field and a Poisson equation solved only in two dimensions; Section 2.1 also describes simplifications to the benchmark setup. Neither section addresses whether important plasma feedback requires solving the full electric and magnetic fields with unapproximated Maxwell equations. Searches for Maxwell equations and self-consistent fields found no passage making that conditional claim. (LLM, conf=0.73)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
