Electroactive shape-memory polyurethane composites incorporating carbon nanotubes

Abstract

Abstract Summary: Electro‐active shape‐memory composites were synthesized using conducting polyurethane (PU) composites and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Surface modification of the MWNTs (by acid treatment) improved the mechanical properties of the composites. The modulus and stress at 100% elongation increased with increasing surface‐modified MWNT content, while elongation at break decreased. MWNT surface modification also resulted in a decrease in the electrical conductivity of the composites, however, as the surface modified MWNT content increased the conductivity increased (an order of 10−3 S · cm−1 was obtained in samples with 5 wt.‐% modified‐MWNT content). Electro‐active shape recovery was observed for the surface‐modified MWNT composites with an energy conversion efficiency of 10.4%. Hence, PU‐MWNT composites may prove promising candidates for use as smart actuators. The electro‐active shape‐recovery behavior of PU‐MWNT composites. Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • SMPs can be thermally triggered by indirect heating via Joule effect, infra-red irradiation, or magnetically actuated nanocomposites.

“In addition, SMPs can be thermally-triggered by indirect heating via Joule effect (e.g., PURs enriched with carbon nanotubes) [41,42], infra-red (IR) irradiation (e.g., cellulose nanocrystals filled thermoplastics elastomers) [43] or magnetically actuated nanocomposites [44-46].”
  • Surface modification of carbon nanotubes decreases the electrical conductivity of the composites because the acid treatment increases defects of the lattice structure of carbon-carbon bonds.

“Surface modification of the CNTs decreases the electrical conductivity of the composites because the acid treatment increases defects of the lattice structure of carbonecarbon bonds.”
  • Cho et al. first reported the electroactive SME of SMPs filled with CNTs through joule heating.

“Cho et al. [342] first reported the electroactive SME of SMPs filled with CNTs through joule heating.”
  • Loading PCL-based SMPU with 5 wt% functionalized MWCNTs enabled complete shape recovery within 10 s at 40 V.

“loading PCL-based SMPU with 5 wt% of functionalized MWCNTs for interfacial bonding between polymer chains and nanotubes enabled Cho et al. [35] to completely recover the shape of their composite within 10 s through the application of a 40 V electrical potential.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
