Phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibition restores neutrophil accuracy in the elderly: toward targeted treatments for immunosenescence

Abstract

Key Points: Constitutive PI3K activity is associated with less accurate neutrophil migration in healthy aged adults. This is associated with increased primary granule release and neutrophil elastase activity and may contribute to inflammation and infection.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Neutrophils from elderly individuals also show aberrant migration and enhanced degranulation.

“neutrophils from the elderly also display aberrant migration and enhanced degranulation”

From SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19 and the aging immune system (2021) · cites this paper as [86]

  • Neutrophils from elderly subjects have reduced migration toward chemotactic signals, probably because of constitutive activation of PI3K.

“neutrophils from elderly subjects are characterized by a reduced capability to migrate towards a chemotactic signal, probably because of a constitutive activation of the lipid kinase phosphoinositide 3-kinase [PI3 K] [39]”
  • Inhibition of PI3K significantly improves neutrophil functions by restoring migratory accuracy in elderly subjects, whose PI3K signaling in resting neutrophils is constitutively increased.

“For example, it has been recently demonstrated that the inhibition of PI3K, whose signaling in resting human neutrophils is constitutively increased in elderly subjects, significantly improves their functions by restoring neutrophil migratory accuracy [39].”

Self-check

Percentages, sums and reported differences re-computed from the paper’s own numbers.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
