Fiber Supplements Derived From Sugarcane Stem, Wheat Dextrin and Psyllium Husk Have Different In Vitro Effects on the Human Gut Microbiota
Open accessAbstract
There is growing public interest in the use of fibre supplements as a way of increasing dietary fibre intake and potentially improving the gut microbiota composition and digestive health. However, currently there is limited research into the effects of commercially available fibre supplements on the gut microbiota. Here we used an in vitro human digestive and gut microbiota model system to investigate the effect of three commercial fibre products; NutriKane™, Benefiber® and Psyllium husk (Macro) on the adult gut microbiota. The 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing results showed dramatic fibre-dependent changes in the gut microbiota structure and composition. Specific bacterial OTUs within the families Bacteroidaceae, Porphyromonadaceae, Ruminococcaceae, Lachnospiraceae and Bifidobacteriaceae showed an increase in the relative abundances in the presence of one or more fibre product(s), while Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonadaceae showed a reduction in the relative abundances upon addition of all fibre treatments compared to the no added fibre control. Fibre-specific increases in SCFA concentrations showed correlation with the relative abundance of potential SCFA-producing gut bacteria. The chemical composition, antioxidant potential and polyphenolic content profiles of each fibre product were determined and found to be highly variable. Observed product-specific variations could be linked to differences in the chemical composition of the fibre products. The general nature of the fibre-dependent impact was relatively consistent across the individuals, which may demonstrate the potential of the products to alter the gut microbiota in a similar, and predictable direction, despite variability in the starting composition of the individual gut microbiota.

g_Parabacteroides is enriched by increases in dietary fiber and can digest chemically modified starch.
“The number of g_Parabacteroides is enriched by increases in dietary fiber [61], and g_Parabacteroides can digest starch that has been chemically modified [62].”
From Preventive Effects and Mechanisms of Garlic on Dyslipidemia and Gut Microbiome Dysbiosis (2019) · cites this paper as [62]
The Results ('Effects of fiber addition on microbiota composition') report increased relative abundance of Parabacteroides OTUs after Benefiber addition, and the Discussion reports increases with Benefiber and psyllium husk. The Discussion also says members of the genus, particularly P. distasonis, have been shown to digest chemically modified starch. The claim is broader than these findings: the enrichment was observed with specific fiber products in vitro, not with dietary-fiber increases generally. (LLM, conf=0.84)

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
