Cognitive-behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder: the state of the science

Gordon, Dina, Wong, Judy, Heimberg, Richard G.·2014·The Wiley Blackwell Handbook of Social Anxiety Disorder

Abstract

This chapter reviews the empirical support for cognitive-behavioral interventions for social anxiety disorder (SAD) with the aim of informing evidence-based practice. Exposure techniques with and without cognitive restructuring are best supported, with social skills training and applied relaxation also commonly used. These techniques are compared to other forms of psychotherapy including mindfulness-based stress reduction, interpersonal psychotherapy, and pharmacological interventions administered alone or in combination with cognitive-behavioral therapy. A brief review of neuroimaging findings related to brain regions active in SAD and changes in activation of those regions following treatment is provided. We then consider factors affecting treatment outcome such as comorbidity and treatment modality, and end by highlighting areas in need of further study, including considerations in working with minority populations.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
