A Study on the Role of Midjourney, A Generative Artificial Intelligence Tool, in Enhancing Student Creativity in Illustration Design Classes
Open accessAbstract
Background: Generative artificial intelligence text‐to‐image tools are increasingly used in design education, but evidence is limited on whether structured classroom integration improves expert‐rated creativity outcomes while controlling homogenisation. The objective was to test whether a Studio GenAI Creativity Enhancement Model (S GCEM) workflow using Midjourney improves expert‐rated illustration creativity versus a conventional non‐generative workflow and whether process metrics explain observed differences. Methods: A parallel‐group, two‐section quasi‐experiment was conducted in an undergraduate illustration design studio. Students in the intervention section used S GCEM with Midjourney for early‐stage ideation only, mandatory prompt and version logs, and identical critique milestones to the control section (manual brainstorming, thumbnail sketching, non‐generative references). The analytic sample was n = 162 (S GCEM n = 82; control n = 80). Baseline and final artefacts were scored on 1–5 rubrics for originality, appropriateness, and elaboration. Ideation breadth and iteration depth were derived from logs. Analyses used analysis of covariance and regression. Results: Final Product Creativity was higher under S GCEM than control after baseline adjustment, F(1,159) = 9.000, p = 0.003, partial η 2 = 0.053. Final Originality differed by condition, F(1,159) = 6.000, p = 0.015, partial η 2 = 0.036; Appropriateness, F(1,159) = 4.000, p = 0.047, partial η 2 = 0.024; and Elaboration, F(1,159) = 9.000, p = 0.003, partial η 2 = 0.054. Ideation breadth increased under S GCEM, B = 0.95, t = 4.13, p = 0.001, 95% CI 0.50–1.40, and iteration depth increased, B = 0.70, t = 3.50, p = 0.001, 95% CI 0.30–1.10. Homogenisation was lower under S GCEM, U = 2500, z = −3.05, p = 0.002, r = 0.24. Conclusion: A structured Midjourney‐supported ideation workflow improved expert‐rated illustration creativity while increasing documented ideation activity and reducing homogenisation indicators.

Instructors favour hybrid models pairing GenAI-assisted ideation with structured critique routines.
“Instructor perspectives similarly favour hybrid models that pair GenAI-assisted ideation with structured critique routines to protect critical skills and reduce overreliance, which informs the study's workflow controls and documentation requirements (Ututalum 2025).”

The Abstract (no page provided) describes interviews with 12 instructors, warns that student overreliance on AI may impede skill development, and recommends a hybrid model. The available passage ends mid-sentence and does not establish that instructors favoured a specific pairing of GenAI-assisted ideation with structured critique routines. (LLM, conf=0.78)

The Development of Critical Skills section (p. 9) reports GenAI-supported ideation in a product design course. Promoting Teacher-Student-GenAI Collaboration (p. 12) links a structured interaction framework to stronger student performance and reflection, but not specifically in design education. The review does not establish that a guided workflow combining ideation, comparison, and reflection is the most productive use of GenAI in design education. (LLM, conf=0.85)

The Introduction and Discussion report classroom evidence that AI-generated images improved engagement and self-efficacy. But the Stage 4 assessment and artwork results show that Bian et al. also used expert ratings of students’ paintings, so the implied contrast between those endpoints and expert-rated artefacts is incomplete. The citing study’s own choice of endpoint is not something this source can establish. (LLM, conf=0.86)

Text-to-image systems can pull students toward similar compositions, motifs, palettes, and rendering conventions when prompts converge around shared aesthetic references.

The Results (§4.6) report that prompts tied to the shared robot brief could produce similar AI images, and participants often imitated those images in their sketches. This supports the general risk of visual convergence, but the paper does not establish that this occurs among students or specifically across palettes and rendering conventions; the Limitations (§5.4) say art style was outside the analysis. The Introduction reports higher engagement and self-efficacy, with no increased cognitive load, in a study of 78 fifth-grade art students. The limitations section calls for research across other grades and settings, supporting caution about transferability. It does not establish how transferable the findings are to undergraduate illustration or whether originality, authorship, and final artefact quality carry greater assessment weight there. The Introduction reports full enrollment in both 2024 semesters, and Student Course Survey Responses reports student engagement while noting low response counts (Fall n=7; Spring n=13). The course is described as an accelerated seven-week online course, so the small, single-course context and reliance on student perceptions are fair characterizations. However, the paper does not report rapid ideation as a course finding; it discusses quick image creation more generally. Written responses are described as coursework, not clearly as a measure used to establish that finding. (LLM, conf=0.84)

Each contradiction between two passages listed here was confirmed by an independent check.
Iteration-depth test statistic changes between sections
MajorThe abstract reports t = 3.50 for the iteration-depth difference, whereas Table 3 reports t(160) = 3.80 for that outcome. The difference exceeds rounding.
“iteration depth increased, B = 0.70, t = 3.50, p = 0.001, 95% CI 0.30-1.10.”
“Iteration depth, | 2.80 ± 1.25 | 2.10 ± 1.10 | 0.70 0.34 to 1.06 | t(160) = 3.80”
Sensitivity subset was already excluded from the primary sample
MajorThe final analytic sample already excludes students with incomplete documentation, missing final artefacts, or protocol non-compliance. Excluding those same students again cannot produce the smaller sensitivity-analysis sample implied by its residual df of 140, compared with 159 in the primary ANCOVA.
“A protocol-compliant sensitivity analysis was conducted after excluding students with incomplete documentation, missing final artefacts, or protocol non-compliance (Table S5).In this subset, the condition effect on Final Product Creativity remained statistically significant after adjustment for Baseline Product Creativity, F(1,140) = 8.00”
“Sixteen students were excluded for missing process documentation, including 7 in the S-GCEM section and 9 in the conventional section, and 11 were excluded for missing final artefacts, including 5 in the S-GCEM section and 6 in the conventional section.A further 28 students were excluded for protocol non-compliance, including 16 in the S-GCEM section and 12 in the conventional section, leaving 81 students per condition and 162 students in the final analytic sample.”
Abstract group sizes differ from the analytic sample
MinorThe abstract assigns 82 students to S-GCEM and 80 to control, while the participant flow and results assign 81 to each condition.
“The analytic sample was n = 162 (S GCEM n = 82; control n = 80).”
“leaving 81 students per condition and 162 students in the final analytic sample.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-11.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-11.
Cited sources are checked by gpt-6-sol.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
