The memeification of "woke culture": a multimodal critical discourse analysis of its articulation in Essence; O, The Oprah Magazine; and Teen Vogue
Open accessAbstract
[EMBARGOED UNTIL 12/1/2023] The African American English (AAE) word "woke," remains underappreciated for its significance in American history and in the current Movement for Black Lives discourse. The replication and oversaturation of the concept--which stands for awareness and social consciousness--in cultural products threatens to delegitimize this powerful symbol of culture, the Black freedom struggle, and a social movement looking to combat police brutality. Recently, scholars have focused on the word being used as a framework to explore the social consciousness of advertising campaigns. I argue in this multimodal critical discourse analysis of "woke" and an emerging "woke culture" represents not only consumerism and political activism but also community, identity, and agency. I demonstrate this by analyzing the discourses in Essence; O, The Oprah Magazine; and Teen Vogue magazines from 2016-2020, using Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding model to create a new typology of interpretation for articulations of race, gender, and class in lifestyle journalism. Then, I discuss the memeification of the concept across the sample and its negotiation between communicating and commodifying social consciousness. Finally, I suggest future lines for research and challenge women-centric lifestyle magazines and their editors to serve as editorial beacons for facilitating the discourse on social consciousness in contemporary society.

The music draws viewers into the scenes, with what But Teen Vogue's inclusion does set the stage for further exposure to HBCU culture, when Vice President Kamala Harris raises it profile as an alum of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Big sister Vogue magazine would feature Vice President Harris on its print cover. The depiction was met with some criticism in social media of her wearing a casual pantsuit with Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers against a backdrop of pink and green fabric, representing her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a historically Black sorority founded at Howard in 1908 (Kristjansdottir, 2021). For the magazine's edition, Harris is shown wearing a more formidable look of a powder blue Michael Kors' suit against a more golden backdrop (Kristjansdottir, 2021) The political conflicts with Black citizens, who are part of the elite class highlighted in the March 2, 2017, "The Woke List" roundup, serve to introduce readers to an example of racial discord stirred up by the Trump Administration. August 2017 represented such a significant, historical moment when White nationalists of "Unite the Right" violently clashed with counter protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia. Teen Vogue compiled several briefs chronicling the incident, which circled around the dismantling of Confederate soldier monuments throughout the South, including Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The Trump Administration officials, including President Trump, made comments about the march, saying "you had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides" (Holan, 2019, para. 54). The civil unrest resulted in Heather Heyer's death, the injury of 19 others and a civil lawsuit against 17 white nationalist leaders and organizations, which resulted in a trial awarding $26 million to the plaintiffs (Lavoie, 2021). A series of briefs feature the conversation in August 2017 with "The Woke List" References

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-11.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-11.
Cited sources are checked by gpt-6-sol.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
