The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS)
Open accessAbstract
Between 1997 June and 2001 February the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) collected 25.4 Tbytes of raw imaging data covering 99.998% of the celestial sphere in the near-infrared J (1.25 μm), H (1.65 μm), and K s (2.16 μm) bandpasses. Observations were conducted from two dedicated 1.3 m diameter telescopes located at Mount Hopkins, Arizona, and Cerro Tololo, Chile. The 7.8 s of integration time accumulated for each point on the sky and strict quality control yielded a 10 σ point-source detection level of better than 15.8, 15.1, and 14.3 mag at the J , H , and K s bands, respectively, for virtually the entire sky. Bright source extractions have 1 σ photometric uncertainty of <0.03 mag and astrometric accuracy of order 100 mas. Calibration offsets between any two points in the sky are <0.02 mag. The 2MASS All-Sky Data Release includes 4.1 million compressed FITS images covering the entire sky, 471 million source extractions in a Point Source Catalog, and 1.6 million objects identified as extended in an Extended Source Catalog.

The spectral energy distribution for J1407 is consistent with a lightly reddened K5 star (E(B-V) = 0.09, A_V about 0.32 mag), with no evidence for infrared excess.
“The spectral energy distribution for the star (plotted in Figure 1) is consistent with a lightly reddened K5 star (E(B -V ) = 0.09, A V 0.32 mag), with no evidence for infrared excess”

Section 5.2.4, Photometric Accuracy, describes 2MASS stellar photometry, but does not analyze J1407. Searches for J1407, the stated reddening values, a K5 spectral-energy-distribution fit, and infrared excess found no passage addressing those conclusions in our copy; page numbers were not available. About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
