Abstract

TL;DR

In 476 informal caregivers of advanced cancer patients at a Colombian cancer institute, higher Zarit burden was associated with provenance, lower socioeconomic stratum, lower monthly income, and lower caregiver quality of life. Multiple correspondence analysis identified three axes—caregiver-patient relationship, caregiver sex, and socioeconomic stratum—explaining 40.44% of variance, with women in household roles and first-degree filial relationships linked to intense burden.

Key findings

  • Among 476 caregivers, 309 (64.9%) had no burden and 91 (19.1%) had mild burden; the results text reports 16 (3.36%) with intense burden, while Table 1 reports 76 intense cases (16.0%).
  • Zarit burden levels were associated with provenance (χ² = 6.5; p = 0.03), socioeconomic stratum (χ² = 12.6; p = 0.04), monthly income (p < 0.00), and total CQOLC score (p < 0.00); higher burden corresponded to lower income and lower caregiver quality of life.
  • Three factorial axes explained 40.44% of the variance in caregiver burden: relationship with the patient, caregiver sex, and socioeconomic stratum.
  • A profile of being female, dedicated to housework or another occupation, without a marital relationship with the patient, and with a first-degree filial relationship was associated with intense burden; absence of burden was associated with higher socioeconomic stratum, university education or more, active employment, not being the sole caregiver, higher income, and coming from outside Bogotá.

Methods

  • Observational analytical study of 476 informal caregiver-patient dyads at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología in Bogotá, Colombia, recruited consecutively by convenience from July 2019 to June 2020; inclusion required advanced cancer, age >18, one daytime family caregiver, and voluntary participation.
  • Measures included sociodemographic and caregiving variables, the Zarit Burden scale (EZ; 29 items, score 22–110; no burden ≤46, mild 47–55, intense ≥56), and the Caregiver Quality of Life Index-Cancer (CQOLC; 35 items, maximum 140).
  • Analysis used descriptive statistics, χ² tests for categorical associations, Kruskal-Wallis tests for continuous variables, and multiple correspondence analysis with active nominal variables and illustrative continuous variables; analyses were run in Stata 16 and SPAD 5 with 5% significance.

Limitations

  • Stated: inherent biases of an observational study; other caregiver variables that could be associated with burden were not included; repeated measures of exposures and outcomes may have captured characteristics related to disease dynamics over time.
  • Evident: the single-center convenience sample limits generalizability, and the design does not support causal inference.
  • Evident: the reported number of intense-burden caregivers is inconsistent between the abstract/results text (16; 3.36%) and Table 1 (76; 16.0%), which complicates interpretation of burden prevalence.

Percentages, sums and reported differences re-computed from the paper’s own numbers.

Each contradiction between two passages listed here was confirmed by an independent check.

  • Reported burden groups account for only 416 of 476 caregivers

    Major

    Reported 476 · recomputed 416

  • Socioeconomic-stratum p-value differs from Table 1

The abstract gives p = 0.04 for socioeconomic stratum, while Table 1 gives p = 0.049, which rounds to 0.05 at two decimal places.

  • Provenance p-value differs from Table 1

    Minor

The abstract gives p = 0.03 for provenance, while Table 1 gives p = 0.039, which rounds to 0.04 at two decimal places.

  • Overall median age differs between text and table

    Minor

The descriptive text gives a median age of 47.7 years, whereas Table 1 gives an overall median of 48.9 years.

  • Zarit scale maximum does not match its stated items and scoring

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-14.

Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-14.

Cited sources are checked by gpt-6-sol.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
