Psychophysiological Methods for the Study of Developmental Psychopathology

Fox, Nathan A., Ashley Hane, Amie, Pérez‐Edgar, Koraly·2015·Developmental Psychopathology

Abstract

This chapter begins with a discussion on the basic tenets and strengths of psychophysiological research, and covers those methods useful for examining cognitive processes. It then provides an overview of the methods used to examine the physiological organization of arousal and reactivity. The chapter talks about those methods that may be useful for examining motivation, emotion, and emotion regulation in children. The literature discussed in each of the three broad domains illustrates how the application of psychophysiological methods has contributed to the current understandings of individual differences in developmental trajectories generally and developmental psychopathology in particular. The chapter further talks about prepulse inhibition that has been used to tap into basic cognitive processes. It also focuses on electroencephalograms (ERPs) that have been used with greater frequency to explore the information-processing mechanisms thought to underlie various disorders.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
