Abstract

Dendritic Precision Strikes: The effects of excitatory synaptic inputs are considered to be highly compartmentalized because of the biophysical properties of dendritic spines. Individual inhibitory synapses, however, are thought to affect dendritic integration in a more extended spatial region. Combining optogenetic stimulation of dendrite-targeting γ-aminobutyric acid—mediated interneurons with two-photon calcium imaging in postsynaptic pyramidal cell dendrites, Chiu et al. (p. 759 ) challenge this latter view. The findings suggest that the effect of an inhibitory synapse can be as compartmentalized as that of an excitatory synapse, provided that the synapses are localized on spine heads.

  • Martinotti cells are Sst-expressing interneurons with an axonal plexus in L1 that targets tuft dendrites of pyramidal cells, including synapses on spines.

“we broadly define Martinotti cells as Sst expressing INs with a plexus of axon in L1, where it is known to target the tuft dendrites of pyramidal cells, including making synapses on spines”

From GABAergic Interneurons in the Neocortex: From Cellular Properties to Circuits (2016) · cites this paper as Chiu et al., 2013

The paper’s text under the Abstract heading says somatostatin-expressing interneurons target pyramidal-cell dendrites and reports their terminals apposed to apical dendritic spines. It does not identify those interneurons as Martinotti cells or describe a layer 1 axonal plexus targeting tuft dendrites. No page number is available in our copy. (LLM, conf=0.85)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
