The Nondual Awareness Dimensional Assessment (NADA): New tools to assess nondual traits and states of consciousness occurring within and beyond the context of meditation

Open access

Abstract

= 53) comparing participants receiving a mindfulness induction (i.e., body scan) with those in an attention control group revealed state effects of mindfulness on nondual awareness using two, alternate forms of the NADA-S. Thus, the NADA-T appears to be psychometrically sound, representing a novel, standardized instrument capable of facilitating quantitative investigation of nondual awareness. Furthermore, the NADA-S may be useful for measuring fluctuations in nondual states of awareness evoked during mindfulness meditation practice and other contemplative techniques designed to transform consciousness. • ST-related processes are associated with greater psychological flexibility, enhanced emotion regulation, increased connectedness, and more adaptive integration of challenging experiences.

“Emerging empirical and theoretical work on mindfulness, meaning-making, and self-transcendent experience suggests that ST-related processes are associated with greater psychological flexibility, enhanced emotion regulation, increased connectedness, and more adaptive integration of challenging experiences (34–39).”

From The therapeutic role of self-transcendence in moral injury recovery: theory, mechanisms, and clinical implications (2026) · cites this paper as [38]

Study 2, Part 2b (page unavailable) reports associations between nondual self-transcendence and decentering, broad self-representation, and interoceptive self-regulation—findings relevant to flexibility, connectedness, and emotion regulation. It does not establish that these processes improve those capacities, and the passages do not address adaptive integration of challenging experiences. (LLM, conf=0.85)

  • Existing instruments such as the Nondual Awareness Dimensional Assessment, the Mysticism Scale, and indices of self-transcendent emotions provide preliminary tools for capturing both everyday and high-intensity manifestations of self-transcendence.

“Existing instruments such as the Nondual Awareness Dimensional Assessment, the Mysticism Scale, and indices of self-transcendent emotions provide preliminary tools for capturing both every day and high-intensity manifestations of ST (38, 58).”

From The therapeutic role of self-transcendence in moral injury recovery: theory, mechanisms, and clinical implications (2026) · cites this paper as [38]

Study 1 (page unavailable) identifies the Mysticism Scale as a measure of mystical experiences, and Study 3 describes NADA measures of self-transcendent traits and states, including changes during meditation. These passages support the existence of tools for different manifestations of self-transcendence, but this paper does not establish the claimed indices of self-transcendent emotions or show that the listed instruments collectively capture both everyday and high-intensity manifestations. (LLM, conf=0.84)

Experimental — accuracy not yet measured
  • Much of the self-transcendence literature relies on self-report instruments that face issues of construct overlap and response bias.

“Much of the ST literature relies on self-report instruments such as the Self-Transcendence Scale (109) and the Nondual Awareness Dimensional Assessment (38), which—like other contemplative measures—face issues of construct overlap and response bias (110).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
