Coexistence of Quiescent and Active Adult Stem Cells in Mammals

Open access
Li, Linheng, Clevers, Hans·2010·Science

Abstract

In the (Stem Cell) Zone: Efforts to isolate and characterize various types of stem cells have revealed much about the molecular mechanisms of stem cell self-renewal and differentiation, as well as the function of the microenvironment, or stem cell niche. Li and Clevers (p. 542 ) review what is known about stem cells in the hair follicle, bone marrow, and intestinal epithelium and suggest that two stem cell populations, one that is quiescent and one that is actively in the cell cycle, may coexist in these tissues in a so-called “zoned” stem cell model.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
