A Review on the Application of Blockchain to the Next Generation of Cybersecure Industry 4.0 Smart Factories
Open accessAbstract
Industry 4.0 is a concept devised for improving the way modern factories operate through the use of some of the latest technologies, like the ones used for creating the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), robotics, or Big Data applications. One of such technologies is blockchain, which is able to add trust, security, and decentralization to different industrial fields. This article focuses on analyzing the benefits and challenges that arise when using blockchain and smart contracts to develop Industry 4.0 applications. In addition, this paper presents a thorough review of the most relevant blockchain-based applications for Industry 4.0 technologies. Thus, its aim is to provide a detailed guide for the future Industry 4.0 developers that allows for determining how the blockchain can enhance the next generation of cybersecure industrial applications.

TL;DR
This review analyzes how blockchain and smart contracts can enhance Industry 4.0 smart factories by adding trust, security, decentralization, and automation, while also surveying practical applications across major Industry 4.0 technologies. It provides a guide for deciding when blockchain is appropriate and catalogs the main technical, operational, and regulatory challenges for future industrial deployments.
Key findings
- Blockchain can benefit Industry 4.0 by supporting vertical and horizontal integration, IIoT security, ICPS, Big Data/analytics, industrial AR/VR, autonomous robots/vehicles, cloud/edge computing, additive manufacturing, cybersecurity, and simulation software.
- The paper argues blockchain is not always the best choice: in private networks traditional databases may suffice, and alternatives like IOTA/Tangle offer high-speed, feeless, scalable transactions but have downsides including less proven technology, no true DApp/Turing-complete functionality, possible 34-percent attack vulnerability, and a coordination node that hinders decentralization.
- It reports specific performance constraints: Bitcoin’s original blockchain can reach up to 7 transactions per second; Bitcoin transaction latency follows a Poisson distribution with a 10-minute mean, with about an hour recommended for confirmation; and Gartner predicted blockchain business value-add to exceed $176 billion by 2025 and $3.1 trillion by 2030.
- Main challenges identified include scalability, cryptosystems for resource-constrained devices, consensus algorithm selection, privacy and security, energy efficiency, throughput and latency, required infrastructure, multi-chain management, interoperability/standardization, and regulatory/legal aspects.
Methods
- Design: a narrative review and guide for Industry 4.0 developers, analyzing blockchain benefits, practical limitations, optimization parameters, and relevant research.
- Data/sample: no primary dataset or empirical sample; the paper synthesizes prior literature, standards, projects, and examples across Industry 4.0 technologies.
- Main analysis: qualitative synthesis organized by Industry 4.0 application area, with a proposed flow diagram for evaluating whether blockchain is needed and discussion of benefits versus challenges.
Limitations
- The paper does not state limitations of its own review; it lists challenges of implementing blockchain in Industry 4.0, including scalability, resource-constrained cryptography, consensus selection, privacy/security, energy/throughput/latency, infrastructure, multi-chain management, interoperability/standardization, and regulatory/legal issues.
- Evident from the text: as a narrative review, it does not describe a systematic search strategy, inclusion/exclusion criteria, or quantitative meta-analysis.
- Evident from the text: many benefits and application examples are prospective or based on cited proposals rather than validated deployments, and the authors note that some areas, such as blockchain for industrial AR/VR and robots/cobots, have little research.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-09.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-09.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
