Open access
Freidin, Esteban, Moro, Rodrigo, Silenzi, María Inés·2022·REVISTA SAAP

Abstract

TL;DR

This article is a systematic, critical methodological review of empirical research on affective polarization. It argues that the construct is often ambiguously measured and calls for clearer object definitions and stronger convergent/discriminant validity evidence.

Key findings

  • Across 41 empirical articles (from an initial 59, with 18 excluded), self-report was the most common measurement family: the feeling thermometer appeared in 33 (80%), social distance in 15 (37%), trait evaluation in 8 (20%) (the paper says “de los 31 estudios analizados” at this point, though the review’s final sample is 41), discrete emotions in 6 (15%), implicit IAT in 1 (2%), and behavioral measures in 6 (15%).
  • US evidence: Iyengar et al. (2012) found growing affective polarization driven by lower out-party affect while in-party affect remained relatively stable; objection to a child marrying someone from the opposite party rose from 4–5% in 1960 to 33% among Democrats and 50% among Republicans in 2010. Gidron et al. (2019/2020), across 20 Western democracies, found the US ranked 13th of 20 in affective polarization, with Spain 1st.
  • Iyengar and Westwood (2015): implicit partisan bias appeared in about 70% of self-identified Democrats and Republicans, while explicit bias was higher—91% of Republicans and 75% of Democrats favored their own party. In a scholarship experiment, 79.2% of Democrats chose the Democratic candidate and 80% of Republicans chose the Republican candidate; whites preferred the African American applicant 55.8%; even when the other-party candidate had a higher GPA (4.0 vs. 3.5), the probability of selecting the more qualified other-party candidate never exceeded 30%. In economic games, co-partisans received more generosity (Dictator Game) and more trust (Trust Game).
  • Druckman and Levendusky (2019) found strong correlations among thermometer, trust, and trait-rating measures (each > r = 0.50) but not with social distance; out-group negativity was more extreme when the object was the rival party or its officials than when it was supporters. Klar et al. (2018) found social-distance measures may reflect aversion to politics generally, not only partisan animosity.

Methods

  • Design: systematic critical review of empirical literature on affective polarization, following Iyengar et al.’s (2019) classification into self-report, implicit, and behavioral measures; the paper also proposes methodological recommendations.
  • Data/sample: English-language publications from January 2010 to June 2020 identified through Google Scholar and the reference lists of reviews by Iyengar et al. (2019) and Van Bavel and Pereira (2018); search terms included “affective polarization,” “social polarization,” “affective” + “polarization,” “feeling” + “polarization,” “emotion” + “polarization,” and “polarizing.” Working papers were excluded; only peer-reviewed articles were included. Initial 59 articles, 18 discarded as not pertinent, final 41 empirical articles.
  • Analysis: narrative synthesis and critique of measurement approaches, with attention to concept ambiguity, calculation types (negative/out-group, positive/in-group, differential), and convergent/discriminant validity.

Limitations

  • The paper states its review is limited to English-language, peer-reviewed articles from January 2010 to June 2020, excluding working papers; the search relied on Google Scholar and reference lists; the literature is heavily concentrated on the US; comparative research is scarce; only one article used the IAT and only one (Druckman & Levendusky, 2019) addressed the validity of measures; it calls for precise definition of the attitudinal object and more convergent/discriminant validity evidence.
  • The paper states self-report measures can be intentionally exaggerated or suppressed due to normative pressures; implicit measures like the IAT reduce but do not eliminate intentional manipulation and are not immune to context/social pressure; the IAT is relative and cannot separately estimate in-party and out-party affect; social-distance measures may conflate partisan animosity with general dislike of politics.
  • Evident from the text: the review’s conclusions rest on 41 articles and a search restricted to English-language peer-reviewed work, so non-English and grey literature are not represented; it is a narrative review, not a meta-analysis, and reports no pooled effect sizes.

The Tri-component Model contemplates that in addition to a cognitive and an affective aspect, attitudes have a behavioral component.

“En el estudio de las actitudes, el Modelo Tri-componente contempla que además de un aspecto cognitivo y otro afectivo, las actitudes tienen un componente conductual (Oskamp y Schultz, 2005).”

Because trials within each block occur rapidly and participants are asked to respond quickly, the IAT achieves an attitudinal measure while minimizing the chances that the individual can intentionally manipulate the result.

“Como los ensayos dentro de cada bloque se suceden velozmente, y al participante se le pide que responda de manera rápida, esta prueba logra una medida actitudinal, minimizando las chances de que el individuo pueda manipular intencionalmente el resultado.”

The result showing greater explicit than implicit partisan bias could suggest that, in a context of political polarization, norms pressure citizens to express more extreme political positions than they would support when less concerned about their image, perhaps to look good with co-partisans.

“Como mencionamos con anterioridad, el resultado que muestra un sesgo partidario explícito mayor que el implícito podría estar sugiriendo que, en un contexto de polarización política, existen normas que presionan a los ciudadanos a expresar posturas políticas más extremas de las que apoyarían cuando no están tan preocupados por su imagen, tal vez por quedar bien con los copartidarios.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-13.

Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-13.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
